JJ McCoy lives in Seattle, Washington with his husband, Daniel. JJ’s mother, Betty, lives near Austin, Texas. All four of Betty’s grandparents emigrated from Lithuania to New York City around 1905, landing in Brooklyn long before it became a hipster paradise. Betty grew up hearing both Lithuanian and English spoken at home as a young child in Queens, New York, but the household switched to English-only when her grandmother re-married and moved out. JJ enjoys language study and has at his disposal Deutsch, Français, een beetje Nederlands, muy poco Español, ir dabar truputį Lietuviškai. If all else fails, the Google Translate app may have to rescue us.
This blog chronicles our first visit back to Lithuania in July 2017, where we hope to see the sights, learn a bit of the language, and perhaps meet a far-flung cousin or two.
